Understanding Chlorine Levels in Your Pool or Spa

When selecting a test kit to monitor the chlorine levels in your pool or spa, it’s important to understand the three key measurements:

Free Available Chlorine: This is the active chlorine that sanitizes and disinfects the water, making it the most crucial measurement. It ensures your pool is clean and safe for swimming.

Combined Chlorine: This consists of unwanted compounds that form when there’s insufficient free available chlorine. These compounds can cause unpleasant odors and irritation.

Total Chlorine: This represents the sum of free available and combined chlorine in the water.
The primary concern is the amount of free available chlorine, as it directly impacts the pool’s cleanliness and safety by neutralizing contaminants.

If chlorine levels are too low, you risk the growth of algae and bacteria, the spread of waterborne illnesses, and inadequate water sanitation. On the other hand, excessive chlorine can lead to irritation of the eyes, nose, and skin. It’s also worth noting that chlorine is a carcinogen, so it’s essential to maintain the minimum level necessary for effective disinfection.

For testing, tablet-based kits are generally preferred over liquid reagents for their ease of use and accuracy. Ensure the tablets are DPD type, as these are the only ones capable of measuring free available chlorine accurately.

When collecting a water sample, do so at least 20-30 cm below the surface and away from the pool walls. Follow the instructions provided with your test kit.

The ideal range for free available chlorine in your pool is 1.0-3.0 ppm, with 2.0 ppm being the optimal level for maintaining a healthy and safe swimming environment.
